Higher education institutions play an important role in promoting European values, intercultural understanding, and inclusive academic communities. In times of social change, displacement, and increasing cultural diversity, universities are not only places of knowledge creation but also environments where dialogue, solidarity, respect, and shared European values are developed.

Within the Erasmus+ project UkraStud, particular attention is given to fostering intercultural dialogue and supporting the integration of Ukrainian students into European higher education environments. The project recognizes that successful academic integration goes beyond access to education and requires creating supportive spaces where students from different cultural backgrounds can interact, exchange experiences, and actively participate in university life.

European identity is built on common values such as democracy, human dignity, equality, human rights, freedom, and respect for diversity. Universities have a unique role in promoting these principles by encouraging open communication, intercultural cooperation, and mutual understanding among students, academic staff, and wider university communities.

One of the key objectives of UkraStud is to strengthen intercultural awareness and promote meaningful interaction between Ukrainian students and local academic communities. The project highlights cultural diversity as a valuable resource that enriches learning, research, and social engagement.

The recommendations developed within UkraStud focus on several important areas for strengthening intercultural dialogue in higher education, including:

• promoting intercultural competence among students and university staff;

• encouraging inclusive teaching and learning practices;

• supporting cultural exchange and peer interaction;

• strengthening students’ sense of belonging and social inclusion;

• raising awareness of European values and shared democratic principles.

Intercultural dialogue helps overcome barriers related to language, cultural differences, and unfamiliar social environments. Through mentoring activities, student networks, workshops, and collaborative initiatives, universities can create opportunities for students from different backgrounds to connect, learn from each other, and build lasting relationships.

The project also emphasizes the importance of preventing social isolation and supporting students’ connection with academic and local communities. Environments based on trust, respect, and openness allow students to feel welcomed and valued while contributing to more diverse and resilient higher education systems.

Through intercultural exchange and cooperation, universities contribute to a stronger European identity — one based not on uniformity, but on shared values, diversity, solidarity, and mutual respect. By promoting dialogue between cultures, higher education institutions help students develop not only academic and professional skills but also the competencies needed to actively participate in multicultural societies.By promoting European values and intercultural understanding, UkraStud contributes to building more inclusive and socially responsible higher education environments where every student has the opportunity to learn, connect, and thrive.
